Our neighbor just got a new puppy! Basecamp always tires out Pupper Neubee, but now she is worn out halfway through the morning. Somehow Neighbor pup has even more energy than Amelia. They play together all day. When we pull up, Tips comes running over and these two are inseperable. Totally adorable.
In the woods around Basecamp there is a trusty patch of bluebells that come back every year. They are absolutely gorgeous and we look forward to seeing them in the spring. This year we decided to dig some up and transplant them closer to the hive. Well after taking photos with them, of course! They are in a low lying area around a creek. The ground was wet and soft which made digging them up a dream. We loaded them up in Papas yard cart and planted near the driveway. We hope
So last year Mama Neubee and I bought some asparagus root stock. We had never seen that before so we did not have high hopes when we stuck the shrived up roots in the ground. Well They grew out of control! We are so excited to see that they are doing so well with hardly any maintenance. According to the package, first year we can 'harvest lightly.' Yesterday we harvested our very first asparagus!!! Haha It may have only been one sprout and I may have ate it in the car on the
This year we started our second hive! Step 1: Buying a lot of hardware for the new bees' home. Not exactly the fun step but we were so excited to be one step closer to meeting our girls! Here is our new hive components: Bottom Board Hive Deep x2 10 Deep frames x2 Medium Honey Super x2 10 Medium Frames x2 Inner Cover Top Cover
Fun Fact about the Neubees: We can't help but count all the animals we see. Growing up, a typical evening with Grandma Betty included going to the park and counting all the deer we saw. And then going home and telling everyone "We saw 18 deer at the park today!" At the Neubees St. Louis home, there is a small pond with fish, frogs, and the occasional turtle. Boyfriend Neubee is often amused to find Mama, Papa, and Baby Neubee crowded around the kitchen window counting how man
We feed our lovely bees in the spring before we put on the honey super, and we'll feed again in the fall after we take it off. We feed them a 1:1 sugar water solution. The bees are hardcore into sugar! They go through this in about 3 days. For obvious reasons, we buy our sugar in 15 lb bags now. We feed our girls using top hive feeder. We have tried other feeders but we had issues with robbing and drowned bees. This has been our most successful option and it holds a good amou
One of Our favorite things to do around this time of year is collect blackberries! We have a whole bunch of bushes that grow wild around the property. Only a small percentage of the berries were ripe, but we still got a decent haul. We are so excited to see how many we can gather in a week or two! A little known fact is that Neubees are born blackberry fiends. Ok maybe it's a well-known fact. Guard your berries!
Ok I know this is at the top of the main page but we have to start somewhere right? Starting a blog is awkward, but we are excited to start this new little project. A few years ago, Mama and Papa Neubee bought a piece of land out near Bismark, MO. Haven't heard of it? Neither had we. They were excited to have a place out in the country to have family and friends out at, to get away, and be outdoors. Papa was especially excited about the dark skies. The property is at the base
